Today we had our first official practical assessment of our teaching practice. Each member of the group had the opportunity to give a 15min Micro teach of a subject of their choosing.
When preparing for my micro-teach it was important to first analyse what types and methods of assessment are used in lifelong learning. This would help me to further evaluate how to involve my learners in the assessment process.
My micro teach was based around the subject of Clowning and was delivered to 6 participants with 3 others observing/assessing the session. In its overall effectiveness clowning makes an invaluable contribution to an actor's technique and clown training is applicable to almost any performance style or context within a performance based course. I used a set of exercises to help introduce clowning to those with and without performance experience, allowing interaction with the learning to all members of the micro-teach. Feedback showed that the micro teach was varied in pace and explanations were clear and allows for enthusiasm to filter though as the sessions moved on. The exercises I chose helped indicate a way to assess the students and when to move on to the next exercise after I feel confidence in task learned. There are many different types of assessment that a teacher could have as a tools in lifelong learning, examples include: initial diagnostics of a student, independent assessment, and varied formative, summative assessment methods.
I feel the session went very well and has given invaluable experience to help develop my teaching further. Feedback to improve mostly aimed at looking at more ways to assess learning but a main strength was the thought and effort put into the micro teach to ensure many different learning styles was accommodated.
It gave me areas for improvement and avenues for research to better my teaching practice.
