I had my first observation today.
It is strange the transition from student to teacher. You have a insight into your 16 year old self and have a new found respect for the work and process of your teachers.
There is many factors you need to think about as a teacher. Behaviour management, lesson content, ensuring learning is taking place and assessing that were possible and making sure there is fair participation and support for a mixture of abilities and backgrounds.
I thought the lesson went well and I had a variety of activities on the subject of the voice, Repetition is a key factor within this kind of work to make a significant impact to your breathing and the effect that has on your projection and voice work when working to text and ensemble work. From evaluation forms given out some of the students showed they didn't enjoy that element of the workshop. I broke down feedback into 4 sections.
Most members of the group learned about the physical aspects of voice. They discovered about how voice is produced and the techniques to project your voice. The most learned part of today is the physical process of the voice is produced by air pulsing in the vocal folds and vibrating to create sound to hit the lips, teeth and mouth for the voice output.
Most members of the group found the activities of the workshop useful and informative, they felt their was a range of activities that would be useful in their future practice despite in parts the repetitive nature of the session.
Most members of the group thought my tutor delivery was infomative and I covered a range of topics within voice and vocal work. 3 key words coming out of the feedback was GOOD,HELPFUL and CLEAR. One student writing GOOD JOB PAL! :) really makes your day that you are doing the right thing by training to be a teacher and trying to make a difference where possible.
Most members of the group felt that the workshop catered for the learning style and in some cases covered a variety of learning styles the individual students have. There was useful feedback from one student who feels that exhaling breath for longer would have benefited him further. This is would be a good question to ask initially of students if I did the workshop again. How long does it take you to exhale to get a general concensis of the group to match workshop and session activities.
I really enjoyed the session and should receive formal feedback in a week's time from the specialist subject assessor so I can write a action plan to work on for the next observation.
1 down only 7 to go ! :)
